Designing projection for large rooms

  • Brightness for the room: high-brightness laser projectors, typically 7,000 to 20,000+ lumens, sized to the screen and the house lights.
  • Lenses: short-throw, standard and long-throw lenses so the projector can sit at the back of the room, over the stage or in a booth.
  • Edge blending: two or more projectors blended into one seamless panoramic image.
  • Large screens: big motorized, tab-tensioned and fast-fold screens, front or rear projection.
  • Signal over distance: HDBaseT and fiber runs from the stage, lectern, DJ booth and control room.
  • Safe rigging: structural mounts and secondary safety cables for high ceilings and trusses.
  • Simple control: a touch panel with presets for weddings, conferences, worship and sports nights.
  • Sound to match: speakers, wireless microphones and mixing from our stage sound team.

Laser, DLP and LCD projectors

Technology How it works Strengths Watch for
DLP A chip with millions of microscopic mirrors; most models add a spinning color wheel. Sharp, bright and compact for the price; fast response for gaming; 4K by pixel shifting. Some viewers see a brief “rainbow” on single-chip models.
LCD (3LCD) Three panels, one each for red, green and blue, combined by a prism. No rainbow effect, high color brightness, easy zoom and lens shift for placement. Black levels historically lighter than LCoS; most models use pixel shifting for 4K.
LCoS (Sony SXRD, JVC D-ILA) Reflective liquid-crystal-on-silicon panels. Deepest blacks and highest native contrast; native 4K; the reference for dark home theaters. Premium price; larger chassis.

Today we install mostly laser projectors: instant on, years of stable brightness and no lamps to replace. Read the full guide to DLP, LCD and laser projectors.

How a projector installation works

  1. Site survey. We check the room, the ceiling or wall structure, power and light, measure throw distance and seating, and stress-test the mounting point for the weight of the projector and screen.
  2. Choose the projector and screen. Laser, DLP or LCD projector and the right screen size, gain and material for the room, from Stewart Filmscreen, Elite Screens or Dragonfly.
  3. Mount the projector. A high-quality mount matched to your projector's make and model, set at the correct throw distance and height.
  4. Hide the cables. HDMI, HDBaseT and power run inside the wall or ceiling with in-wall rated cable, for a wire-free look.
  5. Install the screen. Fixed, manual or motorized screen mounted level, with motor wiring and triggers connected.
  6. Calibrate and hand off. Brightness, contrast, color, focus and geometry set for your room, then we show you how to use it.

Projector questions we get asked

How bright does an event hall projector need to be?

It depends on the screen size and the room lighting. Most event halls and ballrooms need 7,000 to 12,000 lumens, and large auditoriums or very big screens 15,000 to 20,000 lumens or more.

Can you make one very wide image from several projectors?

Yes. Edge blending joins two or more projectors into one seamless panoramic image, popular for galas, conferences and worship.

Can the screen disappear when it is not needed?

Yes. Large motorized and tab-tensioned screens roll up into the ceiling, and projectors can be mounted out of sight or on lifts.

Can staff run it without a technician?

Yes. We add a simple wall or touch panel with presets for each type of event, plus inputs at the stage, lectern and DJ booth.
