- Large venue, tripod and outdoor screens
Laser, DLP and LCD projectors
| Technology | How it works | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLP | A chip with millions of microscopic mirrors; most models add a spinning color wheel. | Sharp, bright and compact for the price; fast response for gaming; 4K by pixel shifting. | Some viewers see a brief “rainbow” on single-chip models. |
| LCD (3LCD) | Three panels, one each for red, green and blue, combined by a prism. | No rainbow effect, high color brightness, easy zoom and lens shift for placement. | Black levels historically lighter than LCoS; most models use pixel shifting for 4K. |
| LCoS (Sony SXRD, JVC D-ILA) | Reflective liquid-crystal-on-silicon panels. | Deepest blacks and highest native contrast; native 4K; the reference for dark home theaters. | Premium price; larger chassis. |
Today we install mostly laser projectors: instant on, years of stable brightness and no lamps to replace. Read the full guide to DLP, LCD and laser projectors.

Screen types
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Fixed frame | Dedicated theaters; the flattest surface and sharpest picture. |
| Motorized and in-ceiling | Living rooms, boardrooms and churches where the screen should disappear. |
| Tab-tensioned | Motorized screens that stay perfectly flat, with no waves or ripples. |
| Ambient light rejecting (ALR) | Rooms with windows or lights on; keeps contrast and color with lights up. |
| Acoustically transparent | Theaters with speakers hidden behind the screen, like a cinema. |
| Outdoor and portable | Backyards, poolside, events and rentals. |
Gain, size and aspect ratio
Gain is how much light a screen reflects back toward the audience: about 1.0 for a neutral white screen, lower for gray and ALR screens that protect black levels, higher for bright rooms and weaker projectors. Size follows seating distance: about 1.2 to 1.5 times the screen width for a cinema feel. Aspect ratio: 16:9 for TV, sports and streaming; 2.35:1 for movie lovers.
How a projector installation works
- Site survey. We check the room, the ceiling or wall structure, power and light, measure throw distance and seating, and stress-test the mounting point for the weight of the projector and screen.
- Choose the projector and screen. Laser, DLP or LCD projector and the right screen size, gain and material for the room, from Stewart Filmscreen, Elite Screens or Dragonfly.
- Mount the projector. A high-quality mount matched to your projector's make and model, set at the correct throw distance and height.
- Hide the cables. HDMI, HDBaseT and power run inside the wall or ceiling with in-wall rated cable, for a wire-free look.
- Install the screen. Fixed, manual or motorized screen mounted level, with motor wiring and triggers connected.
- Calibrate and hand off. Brightness, contrast, color, focus and geometry set for your room, then we show you how to use it.

Projector questions we get asked
What size screen should I get?
It depends on your seating distance and the projector's brightness. As a rule of thumb, sit about 1.2 to 1.5 times the screen width away for a cinema feel.
What is an ambient-light-rejecting screen?
An ALR screen uses an optical surface that reflects the projector's light toward the audience while rejecting much of the light coming from windows and ceiling fixtures, so the picture keeps its contrast with the lights on.
Which screen brand should I choose?
Stewart Filmscreen for reference-grade theaters, Elite Screens for wide choice and value, and Dragonfly for motorized and ambient-light-rejecting screens with smart home control. We will recommend one for your room.
What aspect ratio is best?
16:9 suits TV, sports and most streaming. 2.35:1 (cinemascope) suits movie lovers. We can explain the trade-offs for your room.
Can you install a motorized screen in the ceiling?
Yes, including recessed in-ceiling screens with power and a trigger so the screen drops automatically when the projector turns on.

Why buy a projector screen? Projection screens use a special optical reflective coating to maximise picture quality. If you use a plain white wall, you will be losing contrast, sharpness and brightness. Finally, some projection screens have black borders. The human eyes colour perception is influenced by what colours surround the image that is viewed. Screens with black borders seem to show nicer images, and colours!
What is aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is simply the ratio between the width and the height.
