A projector and a great screen are the closest you can get to a real cinema at home. We size the screen to your seating, choose the right 4K laser, DLP or LCD projector for your room, mount it at the correct throw distance, hide the cables and calibrate brightness and color, whether it is a dedicated theater or a living room with windows.

What we install
- Dedicated home theaters with fixed-frame screens
- Media rooms and bonus rooms
- Living rooms with motorized drop-down or ambient-light-rejecting screens
- Acoustically transparent screens with speakers behind
- Projector lifts that hide the projector in the ceiling
- One-button control with Control4, RTI or Savant
Laser, DLP and LCD projectors
| Technology | How it works | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLP | A chip with millions of microscopic mirrors; most models add a spinning color wheel. | Sharp, bright and compact for the price; fast response for gaming; 4K by pixel shifting. | Some viewers see a brief “rainbow” on single-chip models. |
| LCD (3LCD) | Three panels, one each for red, green and blue, combined by a prism. | No rainbow effect, high color brightness, easy zoom and lens shift for placement. | Black levels historically lighter than LCoS; most models use pixel shifting for 4K. |
| LCoS (Sony SXRD, JVC D-ILA) | Reflective liquid-crystal-on-silicon panels. | Deepest blacks and highest native contrast; native 4K; the reference for dark home theaters. | Premium price; larger chassis. |
Today we install mostly laser projectors: instant on, years of stable brightness and no lamps to replace. Read the full guide to DLP, LCD and laser projectors.
Projector screens: Stewart Filmscreen, Elite Screens and Dragonfly
How a projector installation works
- Site survey. We check the room, the ceiling or wall structure, power and light, measure throw distance and seating, and stress-test the mounting point for the weight of the projector and screen.
- Choose the projector and screen. Laser, DLP or LCD projector and the right screen size, gain and material for the room, from Stewart Filmscreen, Elite Screens or Dragonfly.
- Mount the projector. A high-quality mount matched to your projector's make and model, set at the correct throw distance and height.
- Hide the cables. HDMI, HDBaseT and power run inside the wall or ceiling with in-wall rated cable, for a wire-free look.
- Install the screen. Fixed, manual or motorized screen mounted level, with motor wiring and triggers connected.
- Calibrate and hand off. Brightness, contrast, color, focus and geometry set for your room, then we show you how to use it.

Projector questions we get asked
How bright does a home theater projector need to be?
For a dedicated theater with controlled light, about 2000 lumens. A room with some ambient light needs more, and an ambient-light-rejecting screen. Rooms with a lot of daylight need about 3000 lumens or more.
DLP, LCD or LCoS for a home theater?
DLP gives a bright, sharp picture at a good price. LCD has no rainbow effect and strong color brightness. LCoS (Sony and JVC) gives the deepest blacks for dedicated dark theaters. We will recommend one for your room and budget.
Projector or a big TV?
Above about 100 inches a projector gives you far more picture for the money. In bright rooms a large TV can be the better choice. We will show you both options.
Can the screen hide when we are not watching?
Yes. Motorized screens from Stewart Filmscreen, Elite Screens and Dragonfly roll up into the ceiling or a cabinet, and the projector can sit on a motorized lift.
Can one remote run everything?
Yes. We program Control4, RTI or Savant so one button turns on the projector, drops the screen, dims the lights and starts the movie.
