OLED vs QLED vs Mini-LED vs Micro LED
| Technology | How it works | Best at | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| OLED | Every pixel makes its own light and can switch off completely. | Perfect blacks, wide viewing angles, a cinematic picture in darker rooms; very thin designs. | Less peak brightness than the brightest LED TVs; avoid leaving static images on screen for very long periods. |
| QLED | An LED-backlit LCD with a quantum-dot layer for richer color. | Bright, colorful pictures at every price; great in sunny rooms. | Blacks are not as deep as OLED; viewing angles vary by model. |
| Mini-LED | A QLED with thousands of tiny backlight LEDs in local dimming zones. | Very high brightness with much deeper blacks than standard QLED; ideal for bright rooms and sports. | Slight halos around bright objects on dark backgrounds on some models. |
| RGB Mini-LED / Micro RGB | The newest backlights use separate red, green and blue LEDs. | Extremely bright, wide color, no burn-in, very large sizes. | First-generation, premium-priced technology. |
| Micro LED | Millions of microscopic LEDs, each its own pixel; often modular. | OLED-like blacks with LED brightness, no burn-in, long life, any size up to wall-sized. | Very expensive; mostly custom luxury and commercial installs today. |
Our quick recommendations
- Movie room or darker living room: OLED.
- Bright room, sports and daytime TV: Mini-LED.
- The biggest possible screen at a sensible price: 98 to 115-inch Mini-LED, or a projector and screen.
- No compromise, any size: Micro LED.
- Patio and pool: an outdoor-rated TV built for sun and weather.
- Restaurants, offices and lobbies: commercial displays rated for long daily use, with video walls and digital signage.
4K, 8K and connections that matter
- 4K is the standard: nearly all streaming, sports and games are 4K; 8K mainly helps on very large screens viewed up close.
- HDR: Dolby Vision and HDR10+ make the biggest visible difference after the panel itself.
- HDMI 2.1: 4K at 120Hz for PlayStation, Xbox and gaming PCs, plus variable refresh rate.
- eARC: sends full-quality Dolby Atmos sound to a soundbar or receiver over one HDMI cable.
- Wired internet: we run a network cable to the TV for reliable 4K streaming (see networking and Wi-Fi).
How a TV installation works
- Plan. Screen size, height, mount and cable route, matched to your seating and the room.
- Mount. A mount rated for the TV, anchored into studs, masonry or blocking.
- Hide the cables. In-wall power and HDMI, or a slim raceway where walls can’t be opened.
- Connect. Sound system, streaming, cable or satellite, game consoles and network.
- Set up. Picture settings for the room, apps signed in and one remote programmed.
Questions we get asked
Is OLED or Mini-LED better?
OLED is best for darker rooms and movies because its blacks are perfect. Mini-LED is brighter, so it is the better choice for sunny rooms and daytime sports. We will look at your room and recommend one.
Is OLED burn-in still a problem?
For normal TV, movies and gaming, modern OLEDs have built-in protections and burn-in is rare. If a screen will show the same logo or menu for many hours a day, such as in a business, choose Mini-LED or Micro LED.
What is Micro LED and is it worth it?
Micro LED uses microscopic self-lit LEDs, so it combines OLED-like contrast with very high brightness and no burn-in, at almost any size. It is a premium choice today, mostly for custom theaters, luxury homes and commercial video walls.
Can you mount a large TV on brick, stone or tile?
Yes. We use masonry anchors and mounts rated for the weight, and can hide cables behind stone and tile walls in most cases.
Do I need 8K?
For most rooms, 4K looks just as sharp from a normal seating distance. 8K can make sense for very large screens viewed close up.
Need it on the wall? See OLED, QLED and Micro LED TV mounting.
